Answer LED lamp body implanted rats why drugs ineffective on addiction and depression

[LED] China drug network new research may explain why treatment of addiction and depression is invalid for some patients.

This phenomenon and the reward and aversion reaction zone. University of Washington School of Medicine researchers in the study of mouse reaction, found that the brain reward and aversive behavior reaction blocks are very similar, may also inadvertently touch.

The study found that the treatment of addiction and depression drug therapy can simultaneously drive the rewarding and aversive response, on the surface looked like the drug ineffective. The study was published in the Neuron journal in September 2.

In the experiment, the mice implanted LED lamp can drive the reward or aversive neurons.

Leading researchers, anesthesia and basic neurobiology department associate professor Dr. Michael R. Bruchasl said: "our study on K opioid receptor protein caused by this reaction (KOR) neurons, neurons and all about this addiction, including alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine (methamphetamine). We are driven by the two reward and aversion reaction block is very similar to neurons, causing opposite behavior. This phenomenon may explain why drugs sometimes failure - drugs may also drive the two regions, therefore also offset the effect."

When the drug causes temporary reward reaction, formation of addiction, but when the effect disappears, it will drive the aversive response, and then let the brain craving for drugs. The researchers observed after gene design of the mouse, let the light to drive cell activity. The mini LED lights into neurons, stimulation of nucleus accumbens (nucleus accumbens) region, driven reward response. These cells with K opioid receptor protein associated with addiction and depression (KOR).

When the researchers drive brain cells, making the reward response when mice repeatedly come back to the same block in the maze. But when driving a few centimeters outside the cell, the mouse will stay away from the area.

Anesthesiology lecturer, Ream first author Dr. Al-Hasani said: "we are very surprised to find stimulation in the brain the same block, the same cells will lead to different reactions, by understanding the subject matter of the mode of operation, we may be an antidote against the disease more accurately, treatment associated with the brain cells to regional issues, such as addiction and depression."
