Buy light bulb also financing? India residents can purchase 1 yuan LED lamp

In January, India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, launched an initiative to change India and light up the night.

The initiative calls for cities, roads and families to use more LED, the goal is to replace the traditional, more energy consumption of light.

LED lighting energy consumption is less than 80% of incandescent bulbs, and save electricity to ease the power gap, India's power deficit this year fell to 3.6%, the lowest in the history of India. The new plan, the government also hopes to switch 100 cities in May 2016 street lights for LED lamps, the Modi administration has allocated $378 million budget for the program.

Now, 10 months after the launch, the program finally showed results.

It is reported that this year, India LED lamps per month compared with the same period last year, the yield increased 30 times to 30 million units, the government believes that if the India market all replaced with LED lights in 770 million incandescent bulbs sold, will reduce the load of 20 thousand MW each year, save 100 billion kwh, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80 million tons. Compared to ordinary bulbs, LED bulbs have a better shelf life, more than 50 times, compared to compact fluorescent lamp is more 8~10 times.

However, LED is also more expensive. In order to solve this problem, power producers of India National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) joint venture, Rural Electrification Corp (Rural Electrification Corp), Power Grid Corporation of India (Power Grid Corp) and EESL jointly established a joint venture India Power Finance Corporation (Power Finance Corporation), in order to promote the implementation of energy efficiency projects. Through EESL, the government purchases LED bulbs through open tender, and then distributes them to consumers at a cheaper price. This led to a substantial decline in the market price of LED lamps.

With the increase in LED production over the past year, unit costs have dropped significantly, the price of 7 WATT LED lamp is about $1.5 (100 rubles), compared with $9.8 last year.

Consumers can have two ways to get the bulbs, advance payment and shipping financing plan. From the domestic high efficient lighting plan (DELP) the total cost of the LED lamp in the 100~105 between the ruble, if consumers want to buy bulbs through financing, then each LED lamp only pay 10 rubles (about 1 yuan), the remaining 95 rubles will be added to the bill, 10 months after.

Power shortages in India

These plans may have an impact on the power crisis in India, although only a small start. With 3.6% of the annual power gap, Asia's top third economies are in urgent need of a boost to their growth targets. No one knows more than Modi, after all, that his government has promised faster economic recovery and better infrastructure since 2014, especially in the electricity sector.

Modi said in August last year: "the dream of my government is to allow each village 365 days a year, every day for seven days, every day for 24 hours to provide electricity". In order to do this, the Prime Minister of India has even developed an ambitious solar power generation program, aims to achieve 100 billion kilowatts of electricity by 2022.
