CIE released a new technology report, CIE 2017 color fidelity baked

As we all know, CIE rendering index (CRI), especially the general color rendering index (Ra), is widely used in the lighting industry. It is an important index to evaluate the color of light sources in international and domestic standards and technical specifications. However, in recent years, with the development of solid-state lighting, the defect of CRI gradually emerged, in many cases, Ra value and visual assessment can not be compared with the general observer matching, mainly manifested in two aspects: one is unable to accurately characterize the color fidelity; two is the lack of evaluation of perceptual color quality. So CIE decided to measure and regulate the white light source characterized by better methods of color quality, the work is divided into two parts, TC1-90 is responsible for the development of more scientific and accurate indicators of color fidelity, color fidelity and other indicators of color perception related by TC1-91.

This technical report, CIE 224, is the result of TC1-90 research, which proposes the CIE 2017 color fidelity, that is, the general color fidelity index (general, colour, fidelity, index, Rf). The index, based on the fidelity index defined in TM-30-15 of the North American Institute of lighting engineering, largely corrects the inaccuracy of CRI as a color fidelity indicator.

Rf said all the swatches in was light and the reference light color appearance close to the average level, similar to the general color rendering index of Ra, but it only considers a color quality, and does not take into account the visual perception / preference etc.. Therefore, at this stage, Rf can not replace CRI, CRI replacement is the subject to be studied and discussed in the future, in addition to Rf, will develop a series of new color quality indicators related to perception.
