CIE released the latest technical report, analysis of the impact of illumination on visual function

Recently, CIE released a new report "Lighting for Older People technology and People with Visual Impairment in Buildings" (CIE - 227), analysis of the lighting environment on visual function (such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and color vision and visual impact on the office), and the elderly and public places people with low vision residential indoor environment gives some lighting design for the elderly and people with low vision.

When over 45 years of age, people gradually increase intraocular light scattering, spatial contrast sensitivity and retinal illuminance gradually weakened, dark adaptation decreased, the color becomes weak, the vision will gradually weaken. According to the WHO (WHO) statistics, in 2017 the world has more than 285 million people with visual impairment, and with the increasingly serious problem of aging population in the world (as shown in Figure 1), social labor is gradually aging, the lighting design of the elderly population and low vision can not be ignored.

Figure 1 the national aging population (over 65 years) and the percentage of expected future population aging

In the previous report, CIE123 1997 describes the lighting environment on visual function (such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and color vision and visual effects), and puts forward some suggestions for the lighting design of people with low vision; ANSI / IES RP - 28 - 07 on the elevator, corridor, bedroom and bathroom specific application, put forward the overall lighting design scheme for the elderly; CIE 196:2011 analysis of the comparison of different age sensitivity (CSF) calculation model for lighting designers and engineers to provide for the elderly and the design of visually impaired people in the case.

This technical report based on the existing research, combined with the current social situation, carry out the following improvement:

The age of the elderly fell from 65 years to 50 years, and an increase in public places such as office lighting design according to the requirements of the elderly population and low vision;

The system analyzes the environmental impact of the illumination level, brightness contrast, disability and discomfort glare, eye contrast and glare sensitivity and visual function, and provides for the elderly population and low vision corresponding design suggestions;

For example in the form of the more detailed analysis of the different places of the lighting and color design method.

According to the analysis of the technical report, along with the increase of age, while the eyes of the light source and background luminance contrast sensitivity decreased, but the increase of intraocular scattering will directly increase the size of light source in the imaging of the retina, learned from the unified glare index UGR model, the source size is greater, the higher the level of discomfort glare, so age high disability glare and discomfort glare on the human visual effect is more obvious. As shown in Figure 2, the same brightness, glare in the eyes of the elderly was significantly higher than that of young people.

In addition to the human visual function, but also has non visual function, has an important influence on the non visual effect on human circadian system. Light source, light distribution, light spectrum, frequency and duration will have an effect on a person's mood and sleep quality. Therefore, in order to better protect the elderly and low vision people's eyesight and health, lighting design environment should be taken into consideration when the effects of illumination on visual and non visual effect.
