DOE announces new funding for solid state lighting projects

U.S. Department of energy (DOE) announced that it will provide funding for three solid state lighting (SSL) projects. In the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act)" financial support, DOE is looking for projects to promote the project and research and development of SSL technology application market.

U.S. President Obama and U.S. energy secretary Steven Chu announced in June 29, 2009 a new financing plan, focusing on energy efficiency, will allocate $50 million for the SSL project.

The funds are mainly used for DOE two existing SSL project, which is currently in the sixth round of the project, it is the core technology research (Core Technology Research) and product development (Product DevELopment). Third new projects will focus on accelerating the development of SSL manufacturing, which can not only reduce costs, but also improve the performance of SSL products.

The U.S. Department of energy is seeking SSL projects, including the following categories:

The core technology research project focuses on the technical development of applied research, with particular emphasis on achieving efficiency, performance and cost objectives. The selected items will be able to fill the technical gaps or provide favorable information or data.

Product development projects focus on the use of information obtained from basic or applied research to develop or improve commercially viable materials, equipment or systems. The selected projects will be used to develop targeted market applications, while also having fully defined price, performance and other performance parameters that are essential to the successful development of the recommended product.

Manufacturing projects - mainly through the improvement of production equipment, process or monitoring technology to achieve significant cost reduction. The selected projects will face technical challenges, when prices fall to a certain extent, that is, when the SSL and the existing lighting on the basis of the original cost of competition, we must overcome this technical problem.
