Ge develops carbon nano diodes for solar cells

Ge Corp's Global Research Center said, different from the traditional diode, carbon nano diode developed by Ge Corp to perform a variety of functions, a diode and two different types of transistor capable of emitting and detection of sunlight. The diode is formed by the connection of a P type and a n type semiconductor material. In the carbon nano diode device developed by Ge Corp, two regions are formed by electrostatic doping technique. Using two separate gates connected to the carbon nanotubes of the, the P-n junction of the carbon nanotubes can be formed by a cathode bias and other anode voltages used.

Ge Corp scientists have found that an ideal diode can stop the recombination of the middle part of the carbon nanotubes. These results show that carbon nanotubes are very sensitive to contact with the substrate. This finding provides an important clue to any working principle of carbon nanotube based devices.

Ge Corp's Global Research Center pointed out that in the process of light energy conversion into electricity, through the test parameters, carbon nanotubes scientists further elaborated the performance of ideal diode, while providing energy is 1000 times smaller than the wavelength of light, but because of the increase of physical parameters like diodes, carbon nanotubes show important energy conversion efficiency.

The development of carbon nanotube diode technology is a part of the Ge Corp development plan, the Ge Corp for the development of new technology to ensure the level of investment will be more than two times in the next five years, reaching $700 million to $1 billion 500 million.
