Traditional LED applications grow slowly, and LED combines other functions to create value

As we all know, consumer electronics is a very large market, for example, a year of tablet computer shipments of more than 100000000 units, television a year of more than 200000000 sets of shipments, smart phone a year of about one billion and five hundred million of shipments. Such a large market, for LED, how to hug is a topic for the LED industry to pay attention to in the future.

In the past few years, with the increasing efficiency of LED, the application level is becoming more and more wide. From the previous application of the indicator to the backlighting and to the lighting field, the permeability has been greatly improved. However, it can be seen from the following chart that in the next few years, the growth of LED's traditional applications for light sources has been weakened, and the additional value of LED's future is gradually decreasing.

So, does LED really have no future? In fact, not all. In a lot of information applications, LED still has a very strong growth space, for example, LED can combine some sensed functions, such as iris recognition, or AR, VR ranging functions, or UV sterilization, or the future Mini&Micro LED.

The market of optical sensing is huge and the application field is wide

According to data from LEDinside, the 2017 global sensing market was about $45 billion in size and up to about $60 billion in 2023. The optical sensing part of the market was about $1 billion 500 million in 2017 and up to $3 billion in 2023. It was a strong application category in all sensing areas.

Optical sensing has a wide range of applications and can be divided into five major categories: Consumer Electronics (such as biometric, AR/VR), industry (automatic control), vehicle (autopilot), medical (non intrusive optical sensing), and household (intelligent family and lighting applications). In these areas, LED has played a very important role.

Look for the prospect of LED in the field of display, and the future development potential of Micro LED is unlimited.

According to data from LEDinside, the scale of the global display market has reached hundreds of billions of years, and the proportion of LED in commercial display has exceeded half, and the proportion of consumer electronics is greater.

In the field of commercial LED display, with the improvement of technical ability, small spacing has become a very mainstream application in some commercial space and occasions. The current small spaced display can be P0.6, the smaller the distance, the smaller the chip, the stricter the required packaging technology. In addition, Samsung is in Switzerland this year. The world's first 3D Cinema LED screen is also worth the attention of the industry. Therefore, the specification of LED will change at any time with the depth of the application field. The smaller the chip size is, the resolution of the display is getting higher and higher.

In the consumer electronics field, LED is mainly a backlight. As the permeability of OLED has been improving, more and more manufacturers like the Mini LED scheme, and do more difference with OLED. It is expected that in the second half of this year, to about 2020 or three years, the permeability of Mini LED will increase gradually in many products, which is a foreseeable future.

Of course, Micro LED is the direction of future display. At present, the competitiveness of OLED is very strong in self luminescent display, especially in high - order products. In the future, whether Micro LED can compete with OLED depends on the breakthrough of technology, especially the huge transfer technology. Micro LED has unlimited potential for future development, which can be made into a coiled Micro LED, a transparent display screen, and an additional sensor.
