Maxim introduced the current mode, high brightness LED (HBLED) driver MAX16834, for boost, L / buck, SEPIC and high side buck structure. The device can reduce the size, complexity and cost of solid-state lighting (SSL) design (such as: MR16 Spotlight), thereby simplifying the design and implementation of green lighting technology. The device integrates a high side current sense amplifier, a PWM brightness control MOSFET driver, and a reliable protection circuit. MAX16834 is able to provide the most efficient management and thermal management for LED system design, ideal for LED automotive exterior lighting, LCD backlight and building lighting.
A variety of characteristics of the MAX16834 makes it possible to build a boost or buck / buck DC-DC converter with only a few external components. In addition to using the switch controller to drive the N channel power MOSFET, the MAX16834 is also driven by the N channel PWM brightness switch to achieve a wide range of PWM brightness control of the 3000:1. In order to further improve the design flexibility, the device also provides analog brightness control function, allowing the control of the LED current through the external DC voltage. The on-chip high voltage current sense amplifier and switching frequency up to 1MHz allow designers to optimize efficiency and size.
MAX16834 built-in protection circuit, in a noisy environment to ensure reliable work. The driver is provided with the function of analog back heat protection. When the temperature of the LED string exceeds the set temperature, the external negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor can be used to reduce the LED current. In addition, the device also includes overvoltage, overcurrent and overheat fault indication output, programmable, true differential overvoltage protection function to meet the requirements of LED lighting and display backlight in automotive systems.
MAX16834 uses proprietary (patent pending) technology to achieve excellent (>92%) input power factor correction without additional PFC controller. The characteristics and thermal foldback and low cost characteristics combine to make the HBLED drive into the spotlight MR16 and similar with ideal AC power | regulator power supply system.
The LED driver operates from a temperature range of -40 DEG C to +125 DEG C, providing an enhanced heat dissipation 4mmx4mm, 20 pin TQFN package with a bare pad.
