Maxim launches high voltage, linear HB LED driver

Maxim launched MAX16815/MAX16828/MAX16835/MAX16836 high voltage, linear, high brightness LED (HB LED) driver, capable of driving a long series of HB LED in the range of 6.5V to 40V. These single channel devices incorporate an 0.4V (typ) low dropout regulator, thus requiring no external power transistors. The regulator can provide LED current control with an accuracy of + 5%, which ensures excellent brightness matching, reduces the size of the whole LED drive scheme, reduces the cost and design complexity. In addition, the device can be connected in series with the external resistance in the 35mA to 100mA (MAX16815), 35mA to 200mA (MAX16828), 35mA to 350mA (MAX16835/MAX16836) range to adjust the output current. To simplify the brightness control design, the device provides a PWM LED brightness control input. The universal LED driver is easy to use and is suitable for various occasions, including: Car map lights, courtesy light, lamp, dashboard lights, RCL lighting, emergency lights, alarm indicator and indicator lighting and architectural and environmental lighting.

The MAX16815/MAX16828/MAX16835/MAX16836 is designed for noisy car environments and provides reliable protection functions including short circuit protection and thermal protection. The device also has a +5V regulated output that provides up to 4mA of load current. In addition, the device can only use a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor and a few external components, to achieve the LED current thermal return.

MAX16815/MAX16828 provides enhanced heat dissipation, 3mm x 3mm, 16 MAX16835/MAX16836 TQFN package with bare pad in a 6 lead TDFN package with bare pad. All devices operate at -40 DEG C to +125 DEG C automotive temperature range. Chip starts at $0.48 (1000 chips, us FOB).
