Ma Yun: it's not passion, it's worry and concern. When I was 12 years old, I was swimming in a lake in my hometown. I didn't think it was so deep. Five years ago, when I returned to the place, the whole lake was dry! Twenty years ago, there weren't so many cancers, and now, more and more people are getting cancer. It would be a disaster if we worked so hard and finally gave all the money to the hospital.

We always think that where there are complaints, where there is a chance. We found this to be a great opportunity. Obama: Ma Yun introduced his approach; Essar, talk about your salt water lighting project, your experience, what did you learn from it?

Essar: my brother and I built the Salt company. We want to use sea water to solve the lighting in remote areas. You know, in Philippines, 15-20% people live on the island, they don't have access to the grid. They use kerosene lamps, and you know that kerosene lamps are unsafe and polluting. We think, why not provide people with a safer, more efficient lighting? We thought of a device for generating electricity by seawater.

Obama: that's great. I heard that this device can provide 8 hours a day lighting, the price is only $20?

Essar: yes. Very cheap

Obama: I think this is a perfect example. Young entrepreneurs use technology to deal with problems. In Asia, Africa, people can use this lighting, use it to charge the phone, and then buy things on the Alibaba. Buy things from Jack...... Jack, what I want to ask you is, what can we do to support these young entrepreneurs more? Let them succeed?

Ma Yun: on Ali platform, I now have five babies, electricity providers, payment, Ali cloud, logistics, rural. Alibaba is a platform, we do not sell anything, we are able to give small business empowerment, so that they succeed.
