For high efficiency power conversion high voltage analog integrated circuit industry leader Power Integrations company (NASDAQ:POWI) recently announced the launch of a highly integrated and high precision primary side control LinkSwitch-II series AC-DC switch power conversion IC. The LinkSwitch-II device can greatly simplify the constant current (CV/CC) converter design, make consumer products easy to meet all global standards (such as energy efficiency and load for the external power supply energy star 2 standard). The new IC is ideal for mobile and cordless phone chargers, high brightness LED drives and other applications requiring accurate constant voltage or constant current output.
LinkSwitch-II LinkSwitch IC Power Integrations series is the successful launch of a new generation of products, it can be used without optical couplers, all secondary side CV/CC control circuit and all control loop compensation circuit design accurate output CV/CC converter, which greatly simplifies the design. By integrating all control and protection circuitry and a 700 V MOSFET into the 8 pin package, the LinkSwitch-II can not only significantly reduce the number of components, space and system costs, but also improve the reliability of the power supply. Due to the integration of more accurate compensation function, able to tolerance, the inductance of the transformer input voltage variation, output cable voltage drop (LNK61x only) to compensate the temperature drift of output and peripheral components, CV/CC +/-5% and +/-10% tolerance respectively realize temperature range and therefore can be in 0 - 100 C in. Its advanced security features include automatic restart output short circuit protection and hysteresis thermal shutdown. In the use of LinkSwitch-II 5V/1A design, 5 W mobile phone charger design example, the range of 25% and 50%, under 75% and 100% point load test showed that the 115VAC to 230 VAC input, average power efficiency can reach 75%, fully meet the energy star 2 for external power requirements. LinkSwitch-II is integrated in the on / off control circuit, coupled with its IC low power consumption, no secondary side current sense resistor and a control circuit, the power supply has a constant efficiency over the entire load range, and the no-load power consumption is less than 30 mW.
Due to the use of primary side control to accurately control the output current and voltage, thus eliminating the expensive optocoupler and all secondary feedback and compensation components. Compared with the previous generation of LinkSwitch, the use of LinkSwitch-II charger designed to use less than 9 components, and compared with discrete design, it is necessary to use less than 15 components. Because LinkSwitch-II has the function of accurate cable voltage drop compensation, it can greatly reduce the cost of output cable by reducing the copper content of the output cable, which will not affect the output performance. In addition, LinkSwitch-II also requires the use of smaller transformers, which can save copper and magnetic core materials.
Since the secondary feedback detection element is not required, the efficiency of the charger with LinkSwitch-II is nearly 80%. Moreover, LinkSwitch-II can greatly reduce no-load power consumption, when the charger and the device is disconnected, the no-load power consumption will be reduced to the level of difficult to measure, so as to save a lot of electricity consumers. In short, the LinkSwitch-II solution can not only greatly simplify the power supply design, reduce manufacturing costs, but also can save a lot of resources and energy.
