Power Integrations (NASDAQ:POWI) today announced the launch of a series of new reference designs to help LED drive circuit designers to effectively utilize the company's recently introduced LinkSwitch-II series AC-DC power conversion IC. The new reference design (DI-184, DI-185, and DI-186) is able to demonstrate that the LinkSwitch-II IC is well suited for the design of high brightness LED power and ballast. The device has a high precision constant current performance and can reduce the number of external components, use it to design the LED converter with ballast compared to the existing technology, the design is more simple, lower cost, more durable.
LinkSwitch-II uses the Power Integrations advanced primary side regulation (PSR) technology, the technology of using transformer windings to detect the output current, rather than relying on the high cost of secondary side element loss to provide feedback and adjust the output. This can reduce the cost of the system by 30%, making the design more simple, more reliable, lower cost, and has a very high load and standby energy efficiency.
Power Integrations PSR technology to ensure high precision performance of the IC, even in the load pressure drop, core element tolerance and temperature conditions in the manufacturing and work during the period of change, still can make the output current is maintained in the range within + / - 10%. The constant current drive implemented by the LinkSwitch-II will ensure that each LED in the series lamp string can provide approximate light output. In this way, the current sharing problem of parallel diodes can be solved, and the cost of LED classification and the complexity of optical mixing can be reduced.
And many of the halogen lamp and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is different, LED array driven by LinkSwitch-II can be dimmer and more remote control dimmer with the use of modern and traditional AC three terminal bidirectional thyristor switch. LinkSwitch-II has a high standby efficiency for remote dimming is particularly important; lamps in the process of waiting for the power to restart after power off, LinkSwitch-II only absorb 30 mW standby power.
The latest reference design is very suitable for 5.5W lighting applications such as LED, such as bulbs for the replacement of halogen bulbs, interior lighting, landscape lighting and small residential lighting. The circuit described in DI-184 is used to drive the 700mA current flowing through the two series of high brightness white LED. For safety reasons, the DC side circuit is electrically isolated from the AC side. The circuits introduced in DI-185 and DI-186 are used to drive the 350mA current flowing through the lamp string composed of three high brightness white LED. The former uses isolated flyback topology. The latter adopts a novel non isolated buck topology, which can reduce the cost and complexity of the system. Each design uses a corresponding EMI suppression element, and can work in the general input voltage range.
Power Integrations vice president of marketing Doug Bailey said: "by using LinkSwitch-II, lighting designers to design power solutions will meet the LED high efficiency, long life and safe and reliable requirements. The primary side regulation technology eliminates the loss of the secondary side circuit, combined with our EcoSmart high efficiency energy saving technology, can easily achieve efficient and cost-effective off-line LED drive. "
Bailey added: "LinkSwitch-II integrates a number of security features that can be turned off automatically when the feedback loop is disconnected from the external component. The device can also monitor their own temperature, and in the event of failure or when the lamp is not installed automatically shut down to prevent overheating of the lamp body, which adds a layer of security protection for system designers and end-users. Moreover, LinkSwitch-II will not live up to the Power Integrations good reputation in terms of reliability, 700 in LinkSwitch-II V MOSFET can provide input surge protection more powerful, while the input surge will usually damage the ordinary light bulb. "
All LinkSwitch-II series devices are halogen free products, and provide RoHS packaging.
