SIEMENS returned to the lighting industry, but this time it was through the Internet of things

In October, SIEMENS sold its holdings of OSRAM. Since then, SIEMENS has little to do with the field of lighting, except for the Internet of things. But in May this year, SIEMENS acquired the US sensor company Enlighted and returned to the lighting field. This time, SIEMENS has released an open operating system created for IoT, which is further integrated into the Internet of things and part of the lighting.

The operating system, called MindSphere, is a SIEMENS based open network operating system based on cloud computing that connects products, factories, systems and machines, allowing companies to use data generated by the Internet of things (IoT) for high-level analysis. These products and systems can include LED lighting connected to the Internet of things. In addition, these products and systems can integrate sensors and use the Enlighted's sensor platform to upgrade the sensor.

Multiple systems can work at the same time, using sensors to collect information. Therefore, the same sensor used to control lighting can also be used to control the shutters. Other sensors can be unrelated to lighting, but considering the convenience of the operation, the lamps can install these sensors.

Although SIEMENS does not hold shares in the company that makes LED lighting, it now produces sensors and provides the Internet of things operating systems.

As SIEMENS reenters the lighting field, it will now compete with its old brand OSRAM, and OSRAM itself is looking for opportunities for the Internet of things.

One of the challenges facing lighting suppliers is that IT itself is also competing for the same opportunities for smart buildings and smart cities. As a result, lighting companies are competing with science and technology companies. In this sense, SIEMENS, with its engineering and technical guidance, has returned to lighting more from the IT camp. (Editor: LED network James)
