Sony release new Z series TV is LCD or Micro LED?

Sony in early 2016 released a new TV on the CES, using Backlight Master Drive technology to enhance the contrast and try to maintain high brightness effect. After more than half a year, Sony released the ZD9 series.

Sony ZD9 TV design into a large number of LED, and to reduce the focus of dimming, in order to solve the problem before the LED number is less than the three-dimensional image caused by the problem. Sony the release of the TV or the use of liquid crystal display technology, but has been considered to be able to compete with OLED micro LED tv.

But this time the new Sony TV does not seem ideal OLED TV, a 65 inch TV priced at $7500, about 1.75 times a OLED tv. Sony should be able to greatly reduce the production cost, but in after the removed element (liquid crystal polarizing plate, backlight, LCD, spacer and color filters) have the strength to compete with OLED.

Sony believes that the product can be said to be the most perfect TV on the market, while providing high brightness and very black technology. In fact, this TV can be said to be a mixture of liquid crystal and micro LED.

The flagship Z series is a full array LED backlight system redesign. Z series is not only the use of higher brightness and beam more poly LED, but also greatly enhance the number of LED included. Not only that, each LED can be individually controlled. Sony himself is not big enough to plant TV backplane production of this size, so there may be back from the supplier of AU Optronics (AUO), and the use of indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO).

However, these can not be compared with the control of the same phase as OLED TV, at best, can only be said to be closer than any LCD TV OLED tv.

After increasing the number of LED in the backlight, increasing the brightness of each LED and increasing the concentration of the LED light, the corresponding pixels of a single LED decrease accordingly. As a result, LED flash can be more accurate presentation surface contrast. The dark and bright pixels of the pixel is not light leakage phenomenon.

Compared with the traditional contrast the most obvious liquid crystal display technology - straight down LED full array with (full-array back light local dimming) - Sony backlight and dimming system more detailed.

Sony did not disclose how many LED in the end, but it is possible to put a thousand or even tens of thousands of LED on a tv. 4K does not have a progressive scan (progressive scan) function of the Micro LED system is about 11 million LED. According to the stability of the micro LED, such a system may also need backup.

Sony's latest Backlight Master Drive backlight drive technology in the early 2016's CES is still a prototype, then the name is crystal display". The prototype TV can reach the luminous brightness of 1000nits, and can also let the dark surface to maintain excellent black effect.

The highest brightness TV on the market - HDR TV that can enhance the brightness of the unit to enhance contrast and brightness - about 1455nits. LG's OLED flagship HDR TV "G6" luminous brightness reached 600nits but the brightness (brightness) is two times the brightness (luminance).

Sony's Z series will ship in the summer of 2016. However, the actual product will not be released as early as the CES on the prototype has such a high luminous brightness. Sony still believes that this new LCD, micro LED hybrid TV will have a brisk sales performance.

According to foreign media comments, Sony is actually designed almost as good as the performance of the OLED TV and LCD models, but also the only advantage of LCD TV: cheap behind the tv.

Nevertheless, Sony can say that in the development of the technology of micro LED TV further.

In the Backlight Master Drive driver technology to enhance the contrast and reduce the bright surface by dimming effect darkened, Sony still didn't solve the slow reaction time, LCD low color accuracy and wide visual angle (wide viewing angles) when the low contrast defect watch.

If you can achieve the full use of micro LED, Sony is likely to regain the leading position in the TV industry. (compile: LEDinside editor, Zhang Yahan)
