Taiwan researchers developed new materials to help LED better heat dissipation

Light emitting diode (LED) is rapidly gaining popularity in the world, because of the advantages of high brightness, low consumption and durable, it is widely used in many fields. However, few people know, although LED does not radiate heat, but it will generate heat in the semiconductor junction, thereby shortening the service life of the LED, even in low power LED will do so. With the demand for higher power LED lamp, how to control the temperature has become a big challenge.

At present, the Taiwan researchers have developed a real alternative to heavy, hard aluminum heat sink. The team claimed that the use of polyamide (PA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared by the heat sink, the LED lamp can be more effective heat dissipation.

Researchers using titanate coupling agent (TCA) as a molecular bridge reduction of graphene oxide and polyamide, dense nano composite materials increased by 53% than the thermal conductivity of polymer used alone. They tested two different components of the material (a only polyamide, another is composite polyamide / titanate - graphene), these two kinds of materials are applied to the LED, and analyzed by thermal imaging and thermocouple.

Polyamide / titanate graphene material has a higher equilibrium temperature, which indicates that the material ratio of polyamide material heat transfer rate faster. The researchers tested the durability of the composite, and the results showed that the high temperature at the junction during the process of continuous use would decrease the performance of LED. The results show that the composite retains its intensity 95%, and each material retained only 69% polyamide.

In fact, the research team has developed a thermoplastic material, the material is more expensive than the thermal properties of graphene, and can be injection molding process, the shape of the product is easy to control. The material can be used to prepare low cost, light weight and flexible LED heat sink, and improve the service life of LED.
