The latest progress of Micro LED in more than 60 companies around the world

Micro LED is considered by many companies to unveil a new chapter for display technology because of its excellent characteristics such as high resolution, high brightness, super electricity saving and fast reaction speed. Not only mainland China and Taiwan enterprises in China actively invested in Micro LED, but also attracted heavyweight apple, Sony, Facebook, LuxVue, X-Celeprint and other overseas manufacturers to rush in.

And look at Europe and the United States, the United States also has developers to cooperate with Chinese enterprises in Taiwan, take apple as an example, because in the huge transfer bottleneck, apple and TSMC developed the silicon based backplane panel, Apple also got the patent of Micro LED display in the folding phone. ELux, after being acquired by Hon Hai, is also working with Rong Chuang, Taiwan, China. It is committed to developing technology that can transfer less than 50 micron Micro LED chips.

Other US start-ups such as VueReal and Lumiode aim at smaller displays, such as AR devices, projectors and HUD. VueReal hopes to apply this technology to larger displays such as mobile phones and televisions this year. On the other hand, Rohinni expects to successfully implant their microscopic LEDs (250 micron long, 125 micron wide, 80 micron high) in computer keyboards and vehicle lighting.

European semiconductor companies and equipment providers have also joined the research and development ranks. Allos Semiconductors and Veeco have jointly demonstrated the new technology: 200 mm blue green Micro LED silicon nitride wafer, Allos Semiconductors CEO and Plessey Semiconductor technology long recognized that the use of silicon in Micro LED products is better than blue. Gemstones, they argue, will be the only solution to the application of silicon based gallium nitride, and the thermal conductivity of silicon is better than that of sapphire.

The French Soitec is also making indium gallium high brightness blue LED, and has invented a new substrate InGaNOX. All kinds of LED can simultaneously grow on the substrate. Under the same substrate material, the three primary colors Micro LED can be driven and controlled by the same voltage.

European and American companies also worked together. In July of last year, Google invested $15 million to Sweden's Glo, focusing on the development of Micro LED, which is used in mobile phones and smart watches. Glo is very secretive about these developments, but AIXTRON reveals that GL has purchased MOCVD systems for producing Micro LED.
