Researchers from the University of Illinois, Bana, Champaign and Marlborough, Massachusetts, Dow electronic materials company, recently in the United States "science" magazine published the relevant research progress. They show a new type of colloidal semiconductor nanorods that allow a single device to generate electro current while producing a photoelectric effect, and to generate electroluminescence by converting electric energy into light energy.

These nanorods, with a diameter of less than 5 nanometers, consist of three semiconducting materials, one of which emits and absorbs visible light, and the other two for controlling the flow of charge in the first material. The three materials work together so that the LED panel senses the external illumination and adjusts the brightness as it shines.

Because the LED switches so fast between the two functions of light and light that the naked eye cannot recognize the switch, the display panel looks very bright.
