SIEMENS successfully achieved the use of visible light transmission data at 100 Mbit/s bandwidth. The technology can be used to supplement the existing wireless local area network implementation method.
SIEMENS researchers use a digital modulation scheme, white LED as a transmitter, the image detector as a receiver to achieve this transmission. The company does not provide details of white LED, image detection and modulation techniques. The data signal is transmitted over a meter distance under laboratory conditions.
Because the data transmission technology needs to be carried out under the premise of direct visualization, it can not replace the existing RF based wireless LAN technology, the spokesman explained. However, considering the background of a growing shortage of wireless communication bands, the technology based on visible light transmission will be a good complement to the realization of home wireless network. In order to ensure the visibility can be embedded into the ceiling lights on the duplex transceiver.
The study was carried out in conjunction with the European Commission's Omega project, co founded by the EU Framework Program 7 (FP7). Before 2010 IEEE is expected to develop standards for modulation and other technical details. Samsung is also said to be supporters of the technology.
