The red light does not affect the nocturnal animal sleep wake behavior? Fudan team told you

Recently, the influence of different illumination light on mice sleep wake behavior to determine the Basic Medical Sciences, Fudan University professor Huang Zhili Brain Science Research Institute Zhang Ze team and other researchers, correcting the "red mice does not affect the traditional concepts of nocturnal animal sleep wake behavior", set the nocturnal animal experimental dark period lighting illumination parameters provide a theoretical basis, and has guiding significance for the development of health source home at night. The study was published online on May 5th in the journal Nature Publishing Group's "light: Science and Applications" (Light: Science & Applications), International Journal of optical electronic optical "world" (Light World) is introduced.

As the research object of life science experiment used mice at night (dark), daytime rest (light). When the mice were exposed to white light, their activity decreased rapidly and went to sleep. The conventional wisdom is that mice lack red color vision perception, so red light is often used when dark lights are needed to prevent night light from interfering with sleep behavior. However, studies have shown that different laboratories use the same dose of the same type of sleep promoting drugs, and their efficacy or the base values of the control group vary greatly, suggesting that red light in different conditions may affect the sleep wake behavior in mice.

Professor Huang Zhili's team found that the illumination is greater than or equal to 20 LX (international units, illuminance lumen per square meter) red light as compared with the control group of white light, can significantly increase the amount of sleep in mice, and disturbance of sleep structure. When the red light intensity was reduced to 10 LX, the red light exposure in short or long hours no longer significantly affected the amount of sleep and sleep structure in mice. The results suggest that the light intensity of 10 LX or less should be selected at night when the light is needed to be carried out in mice, and the effect of light on the sleep wake behavior can be avoided under the condition of convenient operation of the experimental personnel.
