What happens when light is tied to a single electron?

According to the British Imperial College London (ICL) official website news, the researchers said, the light and electron bound together, or create a new form of "coupling" light, with light and electron properties, help scientists develop circuit use light rather than electronic work. And the study of quantum physics phenomenon in the visible scale.

In ordinary matter, light interacts with a full set of electrons on the surface and inside the material. But the new topological insulator materials through the use of theoretical physics of light and the newly discovered behavior modeling, ICL scientists found that only with the material surface of an electronic interaction, to create a combination of optical and electronic coupling of some attributes.

Normally, the light travels along a straight line, but when tied to the electron, it will no longer travel along the surface of the material along an established path. In the latest study, Dr Vincenzo Giannini and his colleagues modeled the interaction of nanoparticles made of a topological insulator. Their model shows that, like light, which exhibits the properties of electrons and spins around the electron, electrons exhibit some of the properties of light.

In general, when the electrons travel along the circuit, they will stop if there is a flaw. In the latest study, however, the Giannini team found that even if the surface of the nanoparticles is defective, electrons can still move forward with the help of light.

If this property can be used in electronic circuits, the circuit will be more robust and less sensitive to damage and physical defects, the researchers said.

Giannini added that the use of existing technologies, they should be able to observe this phenomenon in the experiment, the team is currently working with the experimental physicists to make it a reality. He believes that this process will help scientists to create a new form of light, this light upgrade, so that this phenomenon is more easily observed.

At present, quantum phenomena can only be seen in the observation of minimal or to be cooled to extremely low temperature of the object, but published in the latest issue of "the new study natural communication" magazine, perhaps enables scientists to study the quantum phenomena at room temperature.
