A new study found that the use of soft colored spotlights in a retail display can increase sales, and the installation of lamps in a particular area of the store can increase the value of the basket by 6%.

Compared with the area used for standard store lighting, the same color light combination can increase customer access by 15%.

Last year, the Philips Lighting Company and a major German grocer, Globus, carried out the study with the aim of looking for lighting equipment to increase sales.

"As a retailer, in order to be a leader in the competition, you have to create a multi - sensory environment and a surprising factor in your store," says Norbert Scheller, a store manager at Globus in the Saarbr u cken store.

The researchers spent two months testing different lighting conditions at the supermarket. Three kinds of background were tested, including the unified overhead lighting in the store, the conventional spotlight and the combination of the light spotlight and the soft color spotlight.

Traditionally, retailers use a uniform white dome light to illuminate the store. The study shows that the 58 spotlights used in the experiment enhance the appearance of the product by increasing contrast.
