Worried about the increase in crime, Columbia city installed new lighting in the urban area.

The city of Columbia plans to install new lighting as early as next month as concerns about urban crime increase.

Katie Essing, executive director of the center for community improvement, said the city plans to install six test lights in the Hitt and Broadway areas.

The Columbia Municipal Council approved the plan as early as January this year to improve public safety. Just a few weeks ago, in the downtown area, there were two shootings on the same weekend.

Sal Nuccio, the owner of the Eastside Tavern, has lived in the city for 20 years. He said, "I think the lights will also help, and this must be combined with the right policing."

Nuccio said the biggest problem is that hundreds of people do not leave after the bar closes, and then hang out in the city centre. This problem has been getting worse and worse in the past five years.

"Getting worse and worse. I have seen more than one time a pistol holster on a belt.

Nuccio said urban police often need patrols to help curb crime.
