Although many monitors suppliers have discontinued active matrix organic light emitting diode (AM-OLED) business, but the technology continues to develop, and in 2007 began mass production, several suppliers launched several monitors.
While there seems to be no dispute about the quality of the AM-OLED, there are still some concerns about the cost, manufacturability and material life of the technology. According to iSuppli company, the supplier's heart is not practical, do not know how long to wait for OLED to compete with the current market, the main technology - TFT-LCD effective competition.
Despite these concerns, the AM-OLED market will grow strongly over the next few years. According to iSuppli, is expected in 2014 global AM-OLED shipments will grow to 185 million 200 thousand, while in 2007 was the 2 million 600 thousand, during the compound annual growth rate of up to 84.2%. Sales in 2014 are expected to rise from $67 million in 2007 to $4 billion 600 million, a compound annual growth rate of $83.3%. ISuppli recommendations
In order to speed up the transformation of AM-OLED from the limited shipments to the mass market, a number of suppliers must increase manufacturing resources and rapidly expand production. Although the mobile phone is clearly the main target of the technology market, but large mobile phone manufacturers need to have enough output to meet the needs of the supply. Since there is no one supplier currently has a huge capacity, so the short term is unlikely to appear in a OLED manufacturers to meet these needs.
In addition, in addition to focusing on the outside of the mobile phone market, the supplier should also start from the high-end mobile phone, because it will make the reason production with excellent image of the product, and the average selling price can be higher than other types of displays. High end OVGA and resolution of more than OVGA of the phone, may generate demand for AM-OLED. Suppliers should try to show the advantages of AM-OLED, especially with the advantages of LCD, so there is reason to set the price higher than similar LCD. Compared with LCD, it is the biggest benefit of handheld devices is likely to reduce power consumption. In addition, OLED technology has been very suitable for the production of very thin display. However, the TFT-LCD industry will not do nothing, it will continue to reduce the panel thickness and power consumption.
Finally, in order to reduce the cost of products, AM-OLED suppliers must improve the service life, manufacturing yield and efficiency. These problems have existed since the AM-OLED came out. ISuppli believes that AM-OLED devices, intellectual property (IP), materials and panel manufacturers should work together to overcome these manufacturing challenges. This will help enhance the strength of each company and avoid duplication of work.
ISuppli believes that if suppliers work together to achieve these goals, in the next six to seven years, AM-OLED in the small and medium display market shipments are expected to increase.
