Bulb lighting era will come to an end

Found mixed "paint" can make any object light, new materials, energy saving, durable than bright lighting, lighting in the foreseeable future, may be "unemployed". Instead of "posts", they will be luminous tables, walls, and even a small fork. A graduate student from Vanderbilt University in one experiment found a mixed "paint" on the light emitting diode lamp, the original blue light-emitting lantern like ordinary incandescent bulbs that emit white light. Academics predict that this new discovery is likely to revolutionize the concept of lighting to the outside of the bulb: as long as this coating, any object can play the role of light bulbs. This means that, since the invention of the light bulb bulb Thomas Edison era, it is likely to come to an end.

Accidental discovery in experiment

Michael - Bowers is a graduate student at Vanderbilt University. The invention of the hybrid coating came from his accidental discovery in an experiment. In that experiment, Bowers just wanted to create a very small quantum dots, size of a few nanometers, less than a hair 1/1000. Quantum dots are made of semiconductor materials nanocrystals, can be called semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as "artificial atoms", composed of a small number of atoms, the size is generally less than 100 nm. Ordinary quantum dots inside generally contain 100 to 1000 electrons. These electrons are very active, and the smaller the quantum dots, the more active they are. Michael - the quantum dots made by Bowers are smaller than ordinary quantum dots, containing only 33 to 34 pairs of atoms. If you use the light to illuminate the quantum dots, or to put them on the power, the quantum dots will be active, emitting a variety of bright colors of light. But something unexpected happened when Michael - Bowers was using the laser to irradiate his quantum dots. "I'm not surprised when a bunch of white light is on the table," Michael - Bowers recalls. "These dots should be blue, but they are now emitting a beautiful white light."

"Paint" is brighter and longer than light bulb

After the accident, Bowers and another student sprout a new idea. They mix the quantum dots with a resin called polyurethane, and then apply the mixture to a blue light-emitting diode lamp, which, like Bowers, sends out white light. This white light is not the blue light of the light-emitting diode through the conversion of the formation of white light, but like incandescent bulbs issued by the warm, yellowish white light. In addition, compared with the 60 watt standard incandescent bulbs, coated with the "coating" light bulb is about two times brighter than the former, the lighting time is also extended about 50 times.

Bulb lighting era will end

The invention of quantum dots mixed paint, scientists believe that the application of light-emitting diodes will enter a new era. Compared with the 60 watt standard incandescent lamp, the light emitted by the light-emitting diode is brighter, the lighting time is longer, can last for 50 thousand hours, and is not easy to break. In addition, the light-emitting diode does not heat, so more energy. The U.S. Department of energy estimates that if the full use of light-emitting diode lighting, by 2025, the United States for lighting energy consumption will decline by 29%. At the same time, Michael - Bowers's discovery may greatly expand the scope of application of light-emitting diodes. Scientists have even suggested that the light-emitting diode can eventually replace the incandescent lamp, fluorescent lamp and sodium lamp. In fact, if the invention is commercially available, the bulb will no longer be the only source of light. Quantum dots mixed paint can be applied to any specific thing, as long as the activation of quantum dots, this thing can emit a variety of colors of light, including white light. By then, the time of the light bulb may have ended.
