Catalyst semiconductor company recently announced its unique buck switching regulator architecture patent, the patent can be applied to drive high brightness LED group of Buck regulator. The patent entitled "use of buck regulator control LED bias" (Patent No.: 7323828), this patent is developed for high brightness LED to simplify the design of new residential and commercial lighting and automotive fields.
This patent has been applied in the new product line Catalyst step-down LED driver design of inductive, new product line to make up for the two kinds of traditional LED driver design issues: first, the operation is simple, but the power consumption of large linear regulator; two, low power switching regulator, the operation is complex, it is difficult to achieve. The "green" LED drive with new patented technology is simpler, smaller size, lower cost and more power efficient, making it a better alternative than traditional linear regulators.
Catalyst power management product manager is also the patent inventor Anthony RussELl said: "when using the new switching regulator scheme, the designer simple to just select a control resistor, then with switching regulator scheme can provide patent stability and accuracy, wide working voltage across the LED drift, no need to consider other complications or calculation related factors like the traditional switching regulator".
The traditional switching regulator in CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode; continuous conduction mode (Discontinuous) and DCM Conduction Mode; discontinuous conduction mode) in two ways, which makes them very complex inside. Catalyst patented buck switching regulator structure precise work between CCM and DCM, Catalyst called XCM (Crossover Conduction Mode; cross conduction mode). In this mode Catalyst switching regulator provides a simple and more efficient solutions. Compared to the linear regulator low voltage range of effective working environment, the Catalyst XCM architecture in a wider range of high-voltage power supply system to achieve effective work. In addition, the XCM architecture provides unconditional stability and eliminates the need for high power current generated by the resistance of the interface pins, chip size, complexity and cost savings.
Catalyst buck switching regulator architecture is the first product of CAT4201: a 7W high efficiency buck LED driver, the most suitable for driving high brightness, 350mA white LED, conversion efficiency up to 94%.
