Chicago to carry out intelligent lighting projects or nearly 350 thousand LED street lights

Recently, the city of Chicago, Illinois announced that it will launch LED (Smart Lighting Project), designed to convert most of the city's outdoor lighting energy saving light source. Chicago will also consider the construction of a central management system of network lighting, the use of street lamps may be deployed to expand its fiber optic network, so that the city can provide new services. The Chicago infrastructure trust (CIT) has issued a request for information to all parties involved in the project (RFI), the deadline is November 15th.

Compared with other major cities, the pace of Chicago's LED technology has been relatively slow. For example, the city of California, Losangeles has deployed more than 140 thousand LED street lights, and active in the system to install wireless network functions.

However, the Chicago renovation project may become the world's largest solid-state lighting (SSL) one of the transformation. CIT said that a total of 348500 outdoor lighting inventory lamps, including Chicago and Chicago park area all the streets, alleys, viaducts, access, lake, etc.. These agencies are responsible for the installation and maintenance of their respective lighting fixtures.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel to build this smart lighting project to reduce maintenance and electricity costs, and intends to provide symbiotic network services. This can serve the public, but also to provide funding for large projects. The mayor said the project will not bring additional burden on taxpayers.

"By improving the lighting system throughout Chicago, we will continue to seek more cost-effective ways to operate and provide a more lasting service to the public," Emanuel said. In addition, we must ensure that the streets and parks in the vicinity of the appropriate lighting system, to create a better living environment for residents. "

The mayor said the project would allow the public sector to seek cooperation with the private sector to improve services and create new revenue. CIT executive director Leslie Darling said: "this project has created an opportunity for the infrastructure trust to work with the city to achieve community modern lighting, while saving costs and improving energy efficiency in the city. "

To be more specific, this street lamp project hopes to build a network infrastructure to provide services unrelated to outdoor lighting. For example, a GE lighting project in California, Santiago is expected to become the backbone of intelligent parking services and other services not yet identified.

RFI documents show that, in addition to outdoor lighting becomes more efficient, the existing urban and park infrastructure can be enabled in the safety and quality of life area. RFI said it will expand the city's street lighting control and digital services for the evaluation of the optical network.
