EU to spend $10 million to start OLED production projects

CombOLED is the EU's seventh collaborative R & D framework project. Its goal is to integrate the structure of the new equipment, make full use of advanced manufacturing technology and low complexity of materials, thereby developing cost-effective lighting technology based on OLED.

The project was led by OSRAM Opto semiconductor, which was launched in January 1, 2008 for a period of 3 years, with a budget of $7 million ($10 million 900 thousand). Although it did not disclose how much money the EU provided, but according to the EU's previous research practice, the EU and commercial companies will be funded by half.

CombOLED alliance can be regarded as a complete OLED supply chain, covering the provision of infrastructure, equipment manufacturing, and application design, prototype implementation, etc.. The seven main partners are from France, Spain, Italy and germany.

General lighting market is expected in 2015 will exceed 1 billion euros, while OLED technology is considered to be a powerful force in this market, the outstanding technical features are: lighting can last more than 10 thousand hours, brightness up to 1000cd/ square meters, power efficiency up to 40-60lm/W.

The expected outcome of CombOLED project is the component architecture of large format transparent light source.
