Five large companies development mode WCDMA mobile phone chip platform

NTT DoCoMo announced that Fujitsu, MITSUBISHI, Renesas, SHARP motor and the day before, will jointly develop a single chip integrated circuit (LSI) mobile phone platform comprehensive. The platform can be used to support HSDPA/WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE dual-mode mobile phones, as well as the core operating system software. The new mobile phone platform will help speed up the promotion of FOMA services including NTT's WCDMA in the global market, while reducing the cost of these phones. The company is expected to develop this platform in the second quarter of fiscal year (July to September).

According to reports, the next generation of mobile phone platform based on NTT DoCoMo and Renesas since the beginning of July 2004 the development of large scale integrated circuit technology based on single chip. The platform integrates a baseband processor and SH-Mobile application processor for dual-mode WCDMA and GSM/GPRS phones. This common platform adds new features, such as support for HSPDA and EDGE technologies, which also support the operating system, middleware, and drives.

The platform can be used as a basis for the design of WCDMA mobile phone system directly, without Fujitsu, MITSUBISHI motor and SHARP mobile phone manufacturers for ordinary mobile phone functions to develop one system, which can significantly reduce the time and cost of development. At the same time, it also allows them to devote more time and resources to the development of different phones.

Renesas will initially be the platform to provide FOMA services, will later be used for UMTS. When the platform is widely used, the cost of mobile phones will be further reduced.
