Introduction of LED technology of gallium nitride silicon substrate

Bridgelux (Bridgelux) is an American developer and manufacturer of LED lighting, the company recently announced that they have successfully implemented the new silicon substrate manufacturing technology research based on LED. The technology uses low cost silicon to replace the more expensive manufacturing materials currently in use. The company official said, 135lm/W Gan silicon substrate (GaN-on-Silicon) production technology represents the industry's first commercial silicon substrate LED technology breakthroughs.

As far as the production process is concerned, most of the existing LED epitaxial wafers are made of sapphire or silicon carbide. However, large diameter sapphire and silicon carbide substrates are expensive, difficult to handle, and can not be widely used. As a result, the production cost of LED has been widely used in residential and commercial building lighting.

However, the new technology is using a larger and lower cost silicon wafer as a substrate for the production of gallium nitride (GaN). Is expected to reduce the production cost by 75% because of its compatibility with modern semiconductor manufacturing technology. Puri said that the optimization of 8 inch silicon epitaxial process will make the production of LED compatible with existing semiconductor automation production line.

Puri is expected in the next two to three years, the company will deliver its first batch of commercial silicon nitride substrate LED products.

Puri said that the company will use its intellectual property in the LED epitaxial wafer and other partners to jointly manufacture silicon based LED products. Currently, the company is working with a number of semiconductor companies to discuss the plan.

Watkins, chief executive officer of Bill, said, "the production of silicon based technology will significantly reduce the cost of LED, and effectively reduce the development of solid state lighting upfront funding. In a short period of two to three years, solid-state lighting will quickly spread, even those who are most sensitive to the price field, for example, commercial lighting, office lighting and residential lighting, and lighting retrofit existing systems will be smoothly and quickly converted to solid-state lighting.
