According to Reuters, according to the requirements of the Japanese government, SONY, Toshiba and several other Japanese companies will work together to jointly capture the next generation of large-size OLED panel key technologies.
These companies include SONY, Toshiba, Matsushita, pioneer, Dainippon, SCREEn, Sumitomo Idemitsu chemical Mfg, SHIMADZU and Hitachi. It will work together to develop OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology to reduce development costs. According to reports, the purpose of cooperation is to better compete with LG, Samsung and other South Korean rivals.
Unlike ordinary LCD monitors, OLED panels do not require backlighting, can be more compact and energy-saving. Japanese government policy makers are required to reduce the production of large-size panels manufacturing costs in order to mass production of OLED panels.
Japan's Ministry of economy, trade and industry is expected to invest 350 million yen ($32 million 780 thousand) in 2012 to help develop the project.
