Maxim launched 36V H bridge transformer driver for isolated power supply design

Maxim launched a wide input voltage range of H bridge transformer driver MAX13256 for isolated power supply design. Engineers can use the program in a short period of time to complete the efficient (up to 90%), isolated DC-DC converter design. MAX13256 uses 8V to 36V DC power supply, the transformer primary winding provides up to 300mA of current drive, for the construction of power up to 10W isolated power supply. The user can independently select the transformer turn ratio to set the output voltage, thereby generating an isolated output of any voltage. A wide voltage range eliminates the need for an external voltage source. In addition, the device integrated protection function can effectively prevent system failure. The use of MAX13256 can save 16 discrete components, greatly reducing the BOM; devices using highly integrated micro TDFN package, greatly reducing the size of the program. By virtue of the above advantages, MAX13256 driver can be easily used for smart meters, industrial and medical equipment, such as the construction of isolated power supply.

Provide insulation protection for smart meters

When using the wired interface to communicate with the smart grid, it is necessary to use the isolated power supply, in order to prevent the high voltage power supply from causing harm to the meter installation personnel and damage the internal circuit of the meter. Transformer and discrete components are usually used to design isolated power supply, but the size of this scheme is large, the cost is very high. The MAX13256 transformer drive scheme provides an alternative method for isolation of high voltage lines.

According to the different types of intelligent electric meter communication interface, the requirements of input voltage and output power are different. MAX13256 wide input voltage range of 8V to 36V can well meet the different power input requirements. The device does not require an external voltage source, allowing flexible selection of transformers to meet a wide range of power output requirements.

High integration and high efficiency

MAX13256 has comprehensive protection function, effectively prevent system level fault. Adjustable current threshold to load current indirect limit two side; overcurrent protection threshold is set by an external resistor from 215mA to 650mA (typ); once the device detects the overheat or overcurrent fault, will can trigger the /FAULT output, the integration of overheating and short circuit protection mechanism to ensure the safe operation of the system, and has PCB space division scheme than lower cost and smaller.

The high integration of H bridge and transformer modules is usually very expensive, and the customer has very limited isolation output voltage. For the need to adopt a simple, low-cost program to achieve non regulated DC-DC isolation applications, MAX13256 is an ideal choice.

MAX13256 extremely high efficiency (up to 90%) helps to reduce system heating in space constrained applications. In addition, the device also has a low power mode, when the driver does not work, the overall supply current can be reduced to 0.65mA (typical).
