Nichia developed 100 lumens / watt high efficiency white LED chip

Announced the day before Nichia, developed 100 lumens / watt efficiency white LED chip, is expected this year. The move comes amid growing competition to improve the efficiency of white LED so that it can compete with conventional light-emitting devices.

Nichia demonstrated its use of white LED chandelier and spotlight prototype. For white LED, efficiency must rise from 70 to 100 lumens / watt, in order to rival the fluorescence. In fact, 100 lumens / watt for white LED manufacturers is a milestone. Originally expected to 2008 to 2010 to reach this level. Large output white light LED chip market has been visible, but consumes more power, reducing efficiency. One approach is to use the efficiency as a module or a light emitting device using multiple chips. In this case, each piece of white LED chip does not have large lumen output, but requires low power dissipation to achieve high efficiency.

Nichia chip 3V input 20mA output 6 lumens, to achieve the efficiency of 100 lumens / watt. Nichia plans to deliver samples in June, and mass production by the end of the year. The first batch of products will be 5mm diameter lamp package. Nichia had predicted 100 lumens / watt white light LED chip will be listed in 2010.

But in its development blueprint, this timetable was accelerated, and set a new goal to achieve 150 lumens / watt in 2007.
