OLED TV market reached $1 billion 200 million in late 2010

Over the years, the industry has been talking about the potential of OLED, now, SONY, Samsung and EPSON demonstrated a prototype of OLED production capacity. So when will the TV manufacturers sell these TVs? For ordinary consumers, whether they will be too expensive?

SONY said it will launch the first OLED TV next year, the size may be between 11-27 inches. No one has disclosed the price of this kind of TV, but experts estimate that the price of small TV may be between $800-1000. Toshiba plans to start selling 30 inches of OLED TV in 2009.

Laurence, chief analyst at NanoMarkets, said that at present, OLED TV has not yet come out, only in the prototype stage.

OLED TV also has another problem: different from the new technology of liquid crystal and plasma, OLED is a variety of liquid crystal technology. Not a new technology means that it is not particularly difficult for consumers to accept it, especially in the case of the first OLED TV prices.

ISuppli analyst Patel said that in order to reach the existing level of LCD and plasma in the TV market, any new technology has a long way to go. The new technology must be very good, the price must be comparable to the existing technology.

Another obstacle to OLED is reliability. UniversalDisplay is responsible for the commercialization of Technology Vice President Janis said, that the use of the OLED panel are machine materials must be further improved to apply to the TV market is "normal". Currently, the use of mobile phones in the life of the OLED panel is 5000-10000 hours, TV manufacturers OLED panel life requirements are 30000-50000 hours.

OLED TV market may be quite large. NanoMarkets predicts that in 2008 the OLED TV market will reach $42 million, will reach $436 million in 2009, will reach $1 billion 200 million by 2010.

There are other problems with OLED tv. One of the biggest problems is the aging time is not synchronized, which means that the red, green, blue diode decay rate is different, which will lead to image distortion. This is changing.

Laurence said that in the past two years, the progress of OLED technology to solve this problem has been solved. CambridgeDisplay, for example, has announced that it will be able to achieve a blue OLED life of 80000 hours, the blue OLED polymer life of up to 100000 hours.

The manufacturing process is also experiencing growing pains. Janis said that at present, OLED manufacturers can produce small size display panels for mobile phones, but the mass production of large-size TV panels may be a challenge, but this problem can be resolved.

Then there's the price. In the beginning, OLED TV prices will be too expensive, the price is not competitive. SONY will launch at the end of this year, priced at $800-1000 OLED TV, while the 40 inch plasma TV price is only $1000.

Major LCD panel manufacturers are also facing the choice: they are competing for the LCD panel Market share. Many consumers only accept liquid crystal technology, so they may not be willing to invest in new technologies such as OLED.

One day, when parts are plentiful and manufacturing efficiency is improved, the manufacturing cost of OLED is lower than that of liquid crystal, but it may take several years. Compared with the same size LCD TV, OLED TV prices will be high on the 6, 7. But in essence, the production of OLED TV has a cost advantage. The question is when will the day come?
