OSRAM launched a new automotive lighting innovation road safety solutions

Road safety solutions

A well-known industry and scientific research institutions of the German Research Alliance has developed intelligent high resolution LED based lighting solutions, the adaptive front lighting into a new field. As project management, project partners OSRAM and Daimler, Fraunhof Association, Hella Group and Infineon in close collaboration, developed a demonstration model.

The model of the two headlamps respectively containing three LED light source, each LED light source is composed of 1024 independent control points of light. This means that the headlamp can be adjusted according to the traffic situation, very precise adjustment, always keep the best lighting conditions, so as not to let other drivers feel dazzling.

At the same time, it can adjust the light according to the actual situation of each turning section, so it will not produce the dark edge area. In addition, the sensor of the automobile is analyzed on the surrounding environment, the headlight can not only illuminate the oncoming vehicle, the driver to see more clearly, and because the beam does not light in the driver's head opposite to the car, the other driver can drive safely. Thanks to this, when driving on a country road, the driver of the vehicle will no longer dim the headlights.

Innovative LED chip

The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of education and Research (BMBF), which lasted three and a half years to successfully complete the production and field test of the front light demonstration device. In this project, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Infineon and Fraunhof Institute of engineering reliability and micro integration (IZM) jointly developed with 1024 independent control points of innovative LED chip.

Prior to this, the existing adaptive headlight system on the market is to install a plurality of LED elements in the headlight side by side, and other electronic components need to be used to open and close the optical segment. Because of the limited space inside the headlamp, the number of segments is limited. In the new solution, the chip integrates the LED electronic activation device, not only to meet the limited space requirements, but also greatly enhance the resolution.

The second phase of the project, to solve this innovative high resolution smart car lighting solutions, OSRAM special lighting business department developed a LED module equipped with electrical and thermal interface, the electronic system can be directly connected to the car.

Reducing the risk of accidents at night driving

Now, the project has been successfully proved the feasibility of the system; intelligent high resolution headlamps will continuously analysis on vehicle and weather conditions: roads, driving speed, there is a car and vehicle distance etc.. Based on these data, the variable adaptive light distribution ensures the provision of customized lighting in various situations. For example, when traveling at high speed, the beam range will be automatically extended.

In the urban traffic, the distribution of the light of the headlamp is wider, and the road surface is illuminated, and the sidewalk and the surrounding area are better illuminated, which greatly improves the safety of the road. These functions are fully implemented electronically, without any mechanical actuator. With a non glare headlight, the driver always has the best lighting at night, while not adversely affect other drivers. This is obviously conducive to improve the driver's visual perception, thereby greatly reducing the risk of accidents at night driving.

OSRAM lighting company chief technology officer Stefan Kampmann said:

"Now, we want to further develop the mass production of products based on this new type of high-resolution LED light source, we see its great potential in the field of headlamp applications. "

Intelligent driving circuit

Infineon Technologies AG has developed an intelligent drive circuit for use in an innovative LED chip to achieve independent control of each of the 1024 light spots. Infineon successfully designed a way to directly connect the smart drive circuit with the top of the LED array. The technical challenge is how to coordinate the special requirements in this area with the manufacturing technology of LED drives. With the intelligent driving circuit and its rich application knowledge related to automotive applications, Infineon has been providing support for a highly innovative adaptive front lighting system.

Main technical requirements of light source

Hella Hooke Daimler group according to the functional requirements, clear the main technical requirements of the light source. Experts in the field of lighting and electronics have developed a complete set of optical systems and the concept of heat dissipation for lighting modules, and have produced a prototype of the headlamp. The headlight is extremely efficient, and can emit light uniformly, and single spot light quality good.

Only the use of electronic components can produce different types of light, without any mechanical actuator. This is an important step towards the digital lighting industry. Hella practice as its own standards for the research achievements together with customer research and development of innovative lighting systems, not only in maintaining the necessary accuracy and quality under the premise of mass production, but also in technology has always been the pursuit of advanced thinking.

In the research project, the company specifically specified the functional requirements and future vehicle characteristics for the complete headlamp system. On this basis, the components and modules of the headlamp system are determined, including the best light distribution based on the future sensors and the vehicle architecture, and the information is transmitted to the image
