Power Integrations new LED driver IC

June 9, 2010 - - for high voltage integrated circuit industry of high efficiency power conversion leader Power Integrations company (NASDAQ: POWI) today announced the launch of two for solid state lighting (SSL) single stage power factor correction and application support TRIAC dimming LED driver IC. They are LinkSwitch-PH (suitable for the design of isolated power supply (LinkSwitch-PL) and suitable for the design of non isolated power supply), both of which can be achieved without blinking monolithic TRIAC dimming, achieve lighting effects similar to incandescent lamp.

LinkSwitch-PH and LinkSwitch-PL series are integrated single stage power factor correction (PFC), so that the power factor of the SSL lighting can reach more than 0.9. The primary side control technology is used in the LinkSwitch-PH device, so it can be omitted from the traditional flyback design commonly used optocoupler and many auxiliary components. Non isolated LinkSwitch-PL design can further reduce the number of components, not only can improve the reliability of the system, but also can reduce the bill of material costs (BOM). The two devices use a single series of design - controller and MOSFET are integrated into a single chip, it can reduce the number of components and eliminates the parasitic elements between the controller and the power of MOSFET, so it can greatly simplify the PCB layout. These new LinkSwitch products can not only simplify the design of flyback power supply, but also can improve its efficiency, and can work in input voltage up to 305 VAC under single voltage products so that they can be used in various kinds of global development suitable for residential and commercial lighting applications and general input products.

The service life of the LED is expected to reach more than 50000 hours in the range of the manufacturer's specified temperature and drive current. The weakest link in the LED lighting system is the drive circuit, because it is often involved in unreliable optocoupler and parasitic capacitance. The exact primary side by using LinkSwitch products in Power Integrations unique control technology can save optocoupler. Moreover, the new LinkSwitch LED driver IC products do not need to use large capacity capacitance. Designers in the use of LinkSwitch-PL and LinkSwitch-PH design SSL products, it can be predicted that the working life of the driver and the precise control of the LED array.

Power Integrations lighting business development manager Bill Weiss said: "these two new products are very suitable for the design of replacement lamps in the limited space of LED driver. LinkSwitch-PH series of products designed for isolated power supply, its rated output power up to 50 watts, so it is very suitable for external LED ballasts commonly used design downlight, architectural lighting, outdoor lighting and signage. These two devices can reduce the number and size of BOM devices in the power system, thereby enhancing the reliability of the system. These IC will enable designers to improve the efficiency of the system, to meet or even exceed all the regulatory standards, including energy star and EN61000-3-2."

The LinkSwitch-PH device can now be samples without halogen, with eSIP "-7C package delivery requirements of ROHS, between 10000 pieces of quantity price between $1.18 and $1.71 per piece. LinkSwitch-PL IC will provide samples in August 2010, will use the compact SO-8 and eDIP by -12 package.
