Research: correct lighting can improve the sleep of patients with Alzheimer's disease

The preliminary results of a new study show that in a sanatorium, correct lighting can improve sleep, mood and behavior in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

People with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia usually suffer from sleep problems, trance, and irritability during the day. The purpose of the study was to detect whether a tailored daytime lighting device could improve the sleep and behavior of patients with Alzheimer's disease in long-term care.

Tailored lighting significantly reduced sleep disorders, depression and anxiety compared to normal and non dynamic lighting conditions. Although all the symptoms were improved, the quality of sleep improved most significantly.

Dr. Mariana Figueiro, a professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's lighting research center in New York, said, "we found that if we carefully transmit and measure the stimuli [light dose], it can have a strong effect on sleep, depression and disorder." depression is a secondary symptom, and light therapy is positive for depression. I was surprised by the influence. "

The study conducted a study of 43 subjects who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. These subjects were exposed to dynamic and non dynamic customized lighting for a continuous four weeks, and around the middle interval. In the last week, measurements of sleep disturbances (the Pittsburgh sleep quality index), the mood (the Connell dementia Depression Scale) and the exagi (Cohen-Mansfield shock index) were collected.

The "circadian rhythm stimulation" in the study is CS 0.3

The lighting is a kind of adjustable light, dynamic color temperature, output and distribution to achieve 0.3 medium "circadian rhythm stimulation". For most of the time after the patient wakes up, lighting is added to the space in which the patient is waiting. The calibrated personal illuminometer is used to monitor the time and other parameters exposed to light. (Editor: LED network James)
