Taiwan to build a new memory card specifications will be jointly promoted with the mainland

Mobile Taiwan area Internet Alliance (OMIA) announced the day before, a new memory card specifications of the alliance has been finalized. This specification is said to be compatible with existing SD and MMC cards, can be doubled USB 2 connection speed, and lower cost.

This card called M card specifications (micro card), aims to enhance the micro storage function of products, and the integration of different memory card interface, providing universal storage and interface platform for mobile devices, to meet the needs of mobile phone, digital camera, video camera, PDA / MP3 player and personal computer demand.

This card specifications supporters in the Taiwan area in the system design, business card manufacturers and IC design companies, and research institutions, namely the Taiwan Area Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). The motivation of these companies and institutions to set up the alliance is to promote the M card, and to coordinate with each other to follow the development of this specification. Currently, OMIA members include only 7 founding members of the research and development of the technology, but is said to be ready to join the alliance to open the door to the other more than and 40 companies.

As the league's engineers are stepping up the development of the occasion of the normative documents, the alliance will also represent and multimedia card association. It is reported that the multimedia card association is interested in rubbing the two formats and working with OMIA in the promotion process. OMIA is currently not linked with another alliance - SD card alliance.

The 7 founding members include BenQ OMIA Pretec, Dentsu, IWC, PA, ITRI, Jizhi on and ruicheng. The alliance said that the global market demand for memory cards, is expected in 2005 will reach 250 million or more, up to more than 500 million in 2007, more than the relevant industries covering connectors, digital cameras and mobile phones, etc..

However, because the standard and patent subject to overseas manufacturers, Taiwan manufacturers in the production and marketing of the memory card are relatively inferior. With SD card production as an example, Taiwan manufacturers must be based on the sales amount of each card to pay a certain percentage of the license fee, but the main competitors in the market, such as Sandisk, Toshiba and Matsushita (Toshiba) (Matsushihta) does not burden the cost. OMIA said that the custom of Greater China has been a large number of manufacturers across the board consensus. OMIA is also expected in 2005 there will be more Chinese mainland and Taiwan manufacturers to join this specification camp.
