Toshiba Co (Toshiba Corporation) today announced that the company will start selling a white light emitting diode (LED) packaging products, provide a very cost competitive for general industrial and LED lighting solutions provider of products, to replace the current LED packaging products. Mass production will begin this month.
The production of LED chips is usually accomplished using expensive sapphire substrates on 2 to 4 inch wafers. Toshiba and BridgELux, Inc. has developed a process for producing a gallium nitride on silicon wafer in LED 200mm, and Toshiba has been applied to the process of northern Japan, a discrete device manufacturing plant - plus Toshiba Electronics (Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation) of the new production line. The use of a new production line packaging product production will begin this month.
Through the use of Toshiba and Bridgelux LED (GaN-on-Si) technology to produce silicon chips, Toshiba can replace the sapphire substrate and on the cost of much more competitive silicon substrate chip.
Thanks to its low power consumption and long life, white LED lighting has been widely used in general lighting, TV backlighting and other applications. In fiscal 2011, its global market shipments reached 700 billion yen (about $8 billion 500 million), and is expected to double in fiscal year 2016 to reach 1 trillion and 250 billion yen (about $15 billion 200 million).
