The new OSRAM chip platform for Golden Dragon Plus red LED efficiency 30%

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors successfully developed the red film LED efficiency increased by 30%, and once again refresh the laboratory record. The latest generation of thin film chips thanks to the optimization of the chip platform, this platform is more potential for further opportunities to enhance the chip. And greatly enhance the efficiency, to open up the LED in general lighting, projection and industrial applications in the field of new space.

In 350 mA operating current efficiency can be as high as 119 lm/W (70 mA, 136 lm/W), the new record of LED from the latest generation of Red 1 mm - thin film chip (InGaAlP), Golden Dragon Plus in the chip assembly package, light-emitting wavelength 615 nm (wavelength). At this wavelength, there is currently no LED with this higher efficiency. The measured efficiency of the chip is 44% (up to 70 mA at the wavelength of 49%), and even exceeds that of the wavelength of 642 nm.

Efficiency means the higher light output in the relevant application and the same current can be larger, lower power consumption. And the number of chips needed to reduce the amount of space to achieve the same brightness smaller, so it will give birth to more novel design. In addition, the elimination of waste heat needs to be reduced by nearly half, thus greatly reducing the demand for cooling. At the same time, the brightness of the light source is becoming more and more compact.

The performance improvement of LED greatly expands the application field of this innovative light source. For example, with a high efficiency, you can use a higher quality of light to create a warm white LED solution, you can also achieve a better balance of energy conversion than the general blue light through color mixing.

Wolfgang OSRAM semiconductor is responsible for the development of this chip technology, said Dr. Schmid, "this achievement will benefit all the use of high efficiency red light applications, especially the application of projection. We expect to be able to start using this new thin film chip in LED products within a year or so."
