Through the quantum dot chromatic light, the white LED luminous efficiency innovation record.

The researchers of the Optical Society of America used the nanomaterials to make white LED with a luminous efficiency of 105 lumens per watt and a new record. After further research, the researchers can make the luminous efficiency reach 200 lumens per watt, and will be applied in the fields of home, office or television in the future.

At present, the white LED on the market is mainly made by covering a layer of yellow phosphorescent agent on the blue LED. However, due to the wide spectrum of phosphorescent agents, it is difficult to make white light adjustment on details. The researchers then combined blue light LED with flexible lenses, and placed nanoscale semiconductor particles, or quantum dots, on the lenses. When the quantum dot is irradiated by blue light, it will emit green and red light, so that the blue, green and red tricolor will be made into white light.

Unlike phosphorescent agents, the quantum dots have a smaller spectral range and more uniform coloured light. Therefore, the combination of colored light and blue light can produce high quality white light and accurately show the desired color temperature and optical properties.

In order to create a new white LED, researchers in the lens and LED chip, put cadmium, zinc, selenium and other substances and quantum dots mixed solvents, and the use of a special silicone resin lens, in addition to allowing light transmission, but also to ensure that the solvent will not infiltrate into the lens. The researchers pointed out that the white LED emitted through the liquid is two times more efficient than the LED light emitted from the solid film.

The Sedat Nizamoglu, who led the research, said that each watt can emit LED of 200 lumen light sources, which can effectively reduce half of the world's lighting electricity consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2 billion tons. The new LED is easy to manufacture and low in cost, which is conducive to mass production in the future. The chromatic light emitted by quantum dots can increase the volume of semiconductor particles and change the density of quantum dots. The next step is to switch to cadmium free solvents. Besides maintaining high luminous efficiency, LED can also meet environmental requirements.
