To enhance the competitiveness of LED in Taiwan, has a number of authorized ITRI Jingyuan

Due to the promising development and application of LED in the future potential, and promote the Taiwan manufacturers in the international patent competition status, Research Institute (ITRI) recently signed with EPISTAR (Epistar) transparent conductive electrode technology can cross license (Indium Tin Oxide, ITO) patent agreement. The Institute's own research and development of ITO technology will be a breakthrough in the current high brightness LED to horizontal dispersion difficulties, and the LED light source brightness increased by more than 20%.

ITRI said, white LED is the main impetus for the growth of global LED, the output value in 2005 reached $4 billion, estimated in 2007 will grow 100%. However, due to the current major LED basic patents for Japan, the Taiwan region in spite of the output of the LED industry is the world's first, the output value is lower than japan. Therefore, ITRI continued development of LED technology, to help improve the competitiveness of the industry; now include ITO electrode technology and AC light-emitting diode (AC LED) technology has been commercialized in Taiwan, and many domestic and foreign manufacturers authorized.

ITRI deputy director Zhan Yiren explained: "ITO is coated with various transition metal and precious metal mixture on p-GaN, one of the basic technology development and to solve the dilemma between the resistance and the light emitting efficiency, it uses a transparent electrode to replace the metal film layer, so that it can have a larger the area with low resistance, the current diffusion effect is better, and more to enhance the luminous efficiency." The LED (AC light-emitting diode (AC)) technology can save electricity more than 30% ~ 40%, mostly used for indicator lights, neon lights and other livelihood products and industrial applications.

Zhan Yiren also pointed out: "ITO is the first to red LED for the basis of development, now it has been widely used in white light LED, the future can extend its application to Blu ray LED, and the technology can help to improve the domestic authorized manufacturers and international manufacturers competitiveness." EPISTAR senior vice president Chen Zepeng said, "at present, the application of LED in daily life still need to improve its brightness, to about 150 to 200 lumens per watt, can greatly save energy. Therefore, the ITO technology can improve the luminous efficiency of more than 20% plays an important role."

According to the agreement, EPISTAR made a total of red LED and blue LED 15 LED patent portfolio exclusive license, not only the technology application of ITO electrode in manufacturing, and for EPISTAR in the LED industry patent layout to provide against the foreign litigation, and actively advocate the rights authorization or competitive advantage.
