Nevada Power, Efficiency Vermont and Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) and the United States energy part signed a memorandum of understanding, they agreed to be Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) sponsors of the contest. L Prize is the first government sponsored semiconductor lighting technology competition, its purpose is to stimulate the lighting manufacturers to develop high efficiency, high energy saving semiconductor lighting (LED) products to replace ordinary bulbs. The purpose of the L Prize competition is to fundamentally accelerate the transformation of the United States from inefficient, obsolete lighting products to innovative, high-performance lighting products. Three new institutions and four of California's energy efficiency agencies (Pacific Gas & ELectric Sacramento Municipal, Utility District, San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison) has promised to create award-winning product application projects and other awards.
DOE SSL project director Jim Brodrick said, L Prize cooperation agencies for all the winners of the competition brings the best prizes, they can make high-performance semiconductor lighting products quickly applied to the market. This is a strong signal to the United States high-quality semiconductor lighting manufacturers, the 7 agencies will provide a broad market for L Prize winners, its potential customers over 40 million. These institutions provide a huge market, will ensure that the purchase of the winning product, which will continue to promote the reduction of technology costs, expand market acceptance.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced that 2007 of the energy independence and Security Act (the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007) issued in May 2008 greatly reduced energy consumption directly, which is to promote the Department of energy to set up L Prize. The legislation is a challenge to the lighting industry, now the most widely used replacement requirements as soon as possible and inefficient lighting products - 60W incandescent lamp and halogen lamp (38 PAR two replacement lamps performance as shown in Table 1), while the development of new lighting products in twenty-first Century, the luminous efficiency of more than 150lm/W.

About L Prize
Energy independence and security act of 2007 (EISA) approved by the Department of energy to set up the L Prize competition. Legislation on the lighting industry has challenged the need to replace as soon as possible the most widely used and inefficient lighting products - 60W incandescent and PAR 38 halogen lamps, while the development of new lighting products in twenty-first Century. EISA sets the basic requirements and bonuses for each group in the competition. Legislation up to $20 million through cash rewards. According to the budget for fiscal year 2009, the Department of energy will donate $1 million as a cash reward. The energy star standards for solid state lighting products can help buyers identify energy efficient products and make decisions. DOE STAR (ENERGY) on semiconductor lighting standards to help buyers choose energy-saving products, the first energy star standard certification of solid state lighting products is expected to be listed at the end of 2008.
