Veeco senior vice president revealed that the company will focus on these areas in the future...

Recently, Viiko (Veeco) senior vice president and MOCVD business general manager Peo Hansson received an interview with the media. In the interview, he mentioned the future direction of Veeco and his views on the LED market in China this year.

Although most of Veeco's revenue comes from selling MOCVD systems for LED production, the future of Veeco will focus on selling systems for manufacturing Mini and Micro LED, GaN power electronic devices for 5G, power management for electric vehicles, VCSEL for 3D scans for unmanned vehicles, and gesture recognition.

Micro and Mini LED

He mentioned that many companies in the market, including SONY and Samsung, are producing the first generation of Mini LED displays. These companies buy LED displays from third party producers, which may be produced using the Veeco MOCVD system.

He stressed that the current real Micro LED display applications (LED length and width are below 50 nanometers) are still in development. Therefore, for companies that are developing Micro and Mini LED technologies, Veeco will provide Propel single crystal system for R & D and trial production. When asked about the customers of Micro and Mini LED developers, he said, "now we see more and more companies entering the trial production phase."

He further revealed that a client is using its system to develop Nanowire LED (Nanowire LED may be another option for high resolution displays).

He said that third - party manufacturers, which already have fully developed and started to produce the Mini LED panel, can use Epik 700 and Epik 868 systems. At the same time, Veeco also provides a K475i system for Micro LED applications.

GaN power electronic devices

In the power electronics market, he saw the opportunities for 5G applications and electric cars. He said that Veeco originally designed the Propel system to produce GaN power electronic devices, and that the Propel system could meet such production requirements.

VCSEL application

He said that future Veeco will sell more MOCVD systems for VCSEL production. In addition, long distance scanning in autopilot may use a laser based on InP material. The laser can be produced using Veeco's K475i MOCVD system.

He also said the company expects its business growth to come from manufacturers and developers of Micro and Mini LED, GaN power electronic devices and VCSEL. He said that China is currently less involved in these areas that Veeco has begun to focus on.

Asked about the impact of the Sino US trade war, especially on the impact of the Chinese LED producer market, he said the company expects China's LED market to be saturated. "We think there will be a situation of overcapacity in the market this year". (Editor: LED network James)
