Infineon released for LED and ordinary light bulb switch product family

Infineon Technologies AG announced the launch of a new five channel high side smart power switch family of products for the control of internal and external automotive lighting system standard lamp and LED lamp, so as to provide a flexible solution for manufacturers, LED lamps to replace the ordinary light bulb for the trend to be. BTS 55XX SPOC (SPI power controller) series N channel MOSFET and control logic and circuit protection characteristics of the charge pump unit is integrated in the monolithic system level package (SiP) design. These functions are integrated into the standard JEDEC P-DSO-36 package, which not only improves the ability of fault diagnosis, but also reduces the number of devices and reduces the design cost and size of the electronic control unit (ECU) of the lighting system.

SPI brings more diagnostic capabilities and simpler design

Each SPOC component has an SPI (serial peripheral interface) for control and diagnostics and a common parallel input pin for direct PWM operation. In addition, BTS 55XX also includes a current sensing signal for each channel, using internal multiplexing, reducing the number of microcontroller I/O pin. The BTS 55XX also has a self regulating current limit to limit power consumption during short circuits.

SPOC can be used to distinguish between open circuit load and other faults in the ON state (such as ultra - moderate overload). Compared with the typical state pins on the discrete smart power driver, the fault diagnosis is mainly based on the fault signal of each channel read on the SPI. Latch fault signal does not require the software to read the timing coordination signal, which is very helpful for PWM applications.

No matter how many SPOC devices, all fault diagnosis can be through a single microcontroller A/D pin and SPI lines, and with other SPI based devices (such as system for chip based car networking sharing). In this way, the smart power driver is connected to the microcontroller I/O port can be reduced, simplifying the design of hardware and software, while reducing the difficulty of PCB layout. These advantages can be further enhanced by using a variety of SPOC devices in ECU design.

Suitable for LED lamps and ordinary bulbs

For automotive applications, OEM manufacturers are replacing the ordinary bulb LED, which is smaller, lighter, and easy to integrate and manufacture. Because the LED is more efficient and reliable than the ordinary bulb, the designer can improve the efficiency of the power management, and can greatly reduce the failure of the vehicle during the vehicle use. Infineon's SPOC family provides a common platform for the design of highly integrated ECU capable of flexible support for a variety of bulbs and LED configurations.

SPOC devices (excluding BTS 5566GX) can be configured as either a bulb or LED mode, using the same hardware driver for two different load types. Mode selection changes the on state resistance (R DS/on), the current limit and the switching conversion rate, but the two load modes are optimized for the switch, protection and diagnostic accuracy. This allows ordinary ECU can be easily shared between different models using ordinary bulbs or LED.

Fault protection function

BTS 5590GX with integrated watchdog circuit with fault protection function. The watchdog is supported by an advanced state machine via SPI, but the county is secure "self protection (limp-home)" function. In the event of a ECU fault or short circuit, the watchdog will be activated, and the SPOC device can be configured so that each channel can be known as the default operating state. Each SPOC device has a dedicated input pin, which is used to receive self protection signals from the BTS 5590GX (or any other device with a watchdog). This is particularly important in safety critical applications such as vehicle exterior lighting. If the fault occurred in the evening, the system can start the "self protection" mode, in this mode, you can open all the side lights, turn lights and tail lights, the vehicle can be seen, to improve the safety of drivers and passengers.

Supply and pricing

SPOC product family's first product - BTS 5590GX can now be used for design projects. The product comes with an evaluation kit that will begin production in 2007. In order to sample the number of orders, BTS 5590GX price of $4.35, the product family's subsequent products BTS 5566GX and BTS 5576GX will provide samples in early 2007. All SPOC devices are packaged in a "green" lead free RoHS (hazardous substances restricted instruction) package.
