LED will be swept PC laptop display backlight market in the next few years

According to market research firm iSuppli recently predicted that by virtue of low power consumption, thin thickness, light weight and environmental friendly advantages, LED in the next few years swept the notebook PC display backlight market. By 2012, 10 large size mobile PC liquid crystal (LCD) panel will have 9 units using LED backlight.

ISuppli predicts that in 2012 shipments of large-size LCD notebook PC panel, there will be 90% LED backlight, the proportion in the first quarter of 2007 was only 4.7%. By the end of this year, the use of LED backlight large-size notebook PC panel shipments will surge by 515.9%, from 2007 to a sharp increase of 17 million 400 thousand to 2 million 800 thousand.

ISuppli definition of large size LCD panel is: diagonal size of at least 10 inches panel. At present notebook PC liquid crystal display uses cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) to provide backlight, although this is a proven technology, and is sufficient to meet the needs of this application, but its power consumption and thickness is not satisfactory. CCFL also contains mercury, a harmful substance. Despite the increasing popularity of LED backlight in notebook computers, but it will suppress the demand for CCFL is very limited. This is because the laptop in the overall size of the LCD CCFL needs only a small proportion. Televisions and monitors dominate the backlight market.

In the field of power management, 13.3 inches of white LED notebook panel power consumption can be lower than the traditional CCFL products of 20%, the thickness can be thin, weight can be light by 20%, and so on.

LED is superior to CCFL in all respects, but its price is much higher than the latter. RGB LED backlight is still much more expensive than the CCFL backlight notebook panel, the price difference of 50 to $80, but the price is higher than the white LED CCFL less than $25. However, panel vendors have begun to develop their own LED backlight capacity to reduce costs. Improve yield is another important factor to reduce costs.

LED backlight panel production rate is still very low, and sometimes a reason to push up costs. Panel manufacturers are working to improve the yield. The next few years, the difference between the white LED backlight notebook panel and CCFL backlight will be reduced to less than $10.

Panel suppliers are also launching new products that are thinner, brighter and more contrast than the old models, which will help to increase the penetration rate. In addition, vendors in the study of how to improve the white LED panel color gamut. Panel vendors continue to launch LED 15.4 based on the RGB and 17 inch notebook panel, mainly for high-end products.
