In August 4, 2008, SHARP said it would launch energy-saving equipment using LED technology, into the lighting equipment market, with a view to the panel and solar cell business, and then build a new pillar of profitability. Taking into account the cost of power generation growth and greenhouse gas emissions, energy saving and long life LED as the next generation lighting prospects. However, the current cost of LED is higher than the average fluorescent lamp, and SHARP will face fierce competition from PHILPS and Toshiba. SHARP's new LED lighting will be launched in Japan in September 1st, priced from 44100 yen to $199500 ($410-1856). Time to launch overseas has not yet been decided, and SHARP is reluctant to talk about sales or market share targets. But SHARP said the Japanese domestic lighting market in 2012 will reach 1 trillion yen, while LED accounted for about 30% of total sales.
