Why OLED development difficult

The size of the bottleneck breakthrough, OLED development progress is slow in spite of the mobile phone and digital media players and other small electronic equipment market has become a symbol of high-end technology, but in the field of large size display, Oled still develop slowly and even lag. In the end of March 2010, the Sony Corp of Japan announced the end of the market in Japan OLED TV, the reason is that the products are unsalable in the market. SONY is the launch of the OLED color TV Pioneer Co, it turned immediately aroused widespread concern in the industry.

In fact, in the large market is only 11 inches inches and LG15 inches of OLED TV production sales, not only very few production, and manufacturers believe that this product makes the company's revenue loss. Samsung despite considerable sales in the OLED panel, but also confined to the small size of the mobile phone market. Why, then, has OLED been limited to small screen applications for years to make it bigger?

In the development of OLED technology, the major manufacturers unwilling to lag behind, have invested in the development and manufacture of OLED panels. Panasonic, Japan's three electronics maker Canon and Hitachi also announced the formation of strategic alliances, joint development of OLED panel business. Up to now, several large size of Samsung OLED TV show frequently appeared in the show, LG already has a flexible display technology, Panasonic is also keen on the research of the TV size OLED. Even so, the production of OLED TV products are still slow to see.

South Korean business ambition or will be launched on the 5 generation line

According to UBIndustryResearch survey, Samsung's OLED sales in 2009 accounted for 73% of global market share. Currently, Samsung's SMD company has the world's largest OLED panel production line. From the beginning of the first half of this year, Samsung will invest $1 billion 300 million to build a large scale of the 5 generation line, used in the production of large-size TV panels, the market will gradually use its OLED transition from mobile phones to TV applications.

However, Samsung Corp executives in March last year, said in a public occasion, due to many technical and production costs, so it takes at least 4 to 5 years to enter the mainstream OLED TV market.

Operating scale even less than 1% of the LG group, under the strong pressure of Samsung, but also had to re integrate its LG electronics, LGDisplay and LG chemistry of the three subsidiaries, joint venture OLED division. LG first acquired in 70s of last century, the first to develop this technology Kodak's ultra-thin OLED screen technology R & D business. Then in March this year, began purchasing equipment, ready to build the 5 generation line, into the TV application.

It now appears that Samsung and LG in the development of large and medium size OLED products and riveting riveting strength, they are scheduled to launch in May 2010 and OLED notebook computers and television.

Objective view of new technologies, OLED advantages and disadvantages are bright

OLED display technology is mainly based on different types of drive, divided into passive drive OLED (PM-OLED) and active drive OLED (AM-OLED) two. Compared with PM-OLED, AM-OLED has more advantages: AM-OLED prepared by TFT (thin film transistor) graphics display substrate so as to obtain the backplane, display capacity, display quality, longer life and better more, it can realize OLED TV display.

Compared with the current mainstream LCD market, OLED has many advantages: first, OLED can be self luminous, and only need the light unit can be electrified, while the LCD backlight lamp as required, so the OLED ratio of liquid crystal of high brightness and greater contrast color effect is more abundant, and because the lamp does not need a lot of as a back light source, so the OLED voltage is lower, more energy saving; secondly, OLED is composed of solid structure, no liquid substance, so as to better seismic performance, not afraid to fall; the response time of LCD TV 1/1000, display the motion picture there is absolutely no ghosting phenomenon; and it has almost no visual angle, even watch in the big picture perspective, still without distortion.

However, the shortcomings of OLED is also fatal enough, the production of large size OLED panel of very low yield (less than 30%) led to its high manufacturing costs, while the LCD panel can reach more than 99%.

In addition, short life is also a problem faced by OLED technology. DisplaySearch OLED once pointed out, the life of the TV just for twenty thousand hours or so, life is much shorter compared with LCD and LED, and to meet the requirements of industry, at least 50 thousand hours, the technical barriers to a certain extent, stop the pace of industrialization of OLED tv. Toshiba Co said its 2009 launch of 30 inches OLED program to make the company in the last year, the loss of revenue in December, which makes the company's business has been re positioned, the future will focus on mobile phones and other small size display.

Seen in this light, OLED really went to the development bottleneck. This is from 2010 after the manufacturers have to invest in 3D LED can be seen. Whether the OLED will break through the bottleneck to the flat-panel TV industry in a new direction, we wait and see.
